Luscious flavors, smooth textures, and a delightful finish. These three key traits of sweet wines make them a perfect pairing for summer. Whether you’re a fan of crisp, semi-sweet whites or rich, dessert-style reds, understanding the sweetness level of different wines will help you find a match for your palate. In this guide we’ll explore what makes a wine sweet, how the sweetness of wine is measured, and teach you the sweetness scale of the Black Box portfolio.

What makes a wine sweet?
Wine sweetness comes from residual sugar (RS) which are the natural grape sugars left after fermentation. The more residual sugar, the sweeter the wine. However, sweetness perception is also influenced by acidity, tannins, and alcohol levels.
Understanding The Sweetness Categories
Now that you know what makes a wine sweet, let's take a closer look at how the RS (residual sugar) level applies to the varietal of the wine. Wine sweetness can be categorized into 5 different categories, which are:
1
BONE DRY
0-1 G/L RS
No Perceptible Sweetness
2
DRY
1-10 G/L RS
Slightly Fruity, But Not Sweet
3
OFF-DRY
10-30 G/L RS
Noticeable Sweetness, Still Refreshing
4
SWEET
30-100 G/L RS
Lush And Rich, Great With Desserts
5
VERY SWEET
100+ G/L RS
Intensely Sweet, Often Used For Dessert Wines
